When a denture does not work

Second Opinion: Dentures

Maybe a denture was fitted and it is hurting your gums. You cannot chew properly, it moves when you talk, or it simply does not look like you. There are many reasons dentures fail, and most of them can be diagnosed.

Which one of these is it?

A full denture, or a partial replacing a few teeth. Choose what you are noticing.

What are you noticing?

It hurts my gums

What it can mean

Pressure spots where the denture presses harder than the rest, often because the fitting surface or the bite is uneven.

Normal, or worth a look?

Sore spots in the first weeks are common and are adjusted. Pain that keeps coming back is worth a look.

Remake it, or choose a different appliance?

Sometimes a denture can be remade, with new impressions, a recorded bite and the teeth set where the muscles allow. With a proper diagnosis it may instead be decided that a different appliance is the better way forward.

Adding a couple of implants under a lower denture can be enough to stabilise it. That is not for everyone: some people need more. Whether you are suitable for two implants, or really need four on the lower jaw, is exactly the kind of question a second opinion answers.

If something is not right, ask.

Dentistry is always challenging, and most dentists do the best they can. Some things are part of settling in and are fixed with small tweaks. If something is worryingly off, if you want reassurance that you are on the right path, or if you want to change provider, Dr. Reshad is here for that.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Some problems, such as sore spots or a loose fit after the gum has shrunk, can be adjusted or relined. Others, such as teeth set in the wrong position or a bite that was never recorded properly, usually need a new denture. A second opinion tells you which.

For many people two implants under a lower denture make a large difference. For others, bone, bite or expectations mean four are needed, or a fixed bridge. It depends on the examination and a CT scan.
